Why the UAE is so focused on the future

To understand why the United Arab Emirates is so heavily investing in innovation, technology and diversification today, you must first know its history. Less than 100 years ago, the entire economy of this region revolved around one thing: pearls. From the late 18th to the early 20th century, the Gulf supplied nearly 90% of the world's pearls. But in the 1930s, everything collapsed. The Great Depression caused demand for luxury goods to plummet, and the rise of artificial pearls from Japan completely destroyed the market.

The region's economy fell apart, and for decades people survived on fishing and small-scale trade. Until oil was discovered in Abu Dhabi in 1958. From that moment on, the fate of the Emirates changed drastically: from poverty to unprecedented wealth.

From oil to a future-proof economy

Despite oil revenues, the lesson from the past has not been forgotten. The UAE's leaders are acutely aware of what can happen when you are entirely dependent on a single sector. That is why massive investments are being made today in sectors ready for the future: artificial intelligence, life sciences, renewable energy and financial services.

In 2017, the UAE became the first country in the world to appoint a Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence. Since then, the country has established the largest AI data centres outside the US, founded the world's first university dedicated to AI, and attracted major hedge funds and asset managers to financial zones like the DIFC in Dubai and ADGM in Abu Dhabi.

Leadership that thinks in generations

This obsession with the future stems from the realisation that wealth is transient. Today's rulers grew up with stories from their grandparents about collapse and scarcity. This has led to an approach that looks beyond today or tomorrow. Strategies focus on the next 20 to 50 years.

Instead of simply relying on oil, the UAE is actively building an economy that can thrive even without it. They invest in knowledge, infrastructure, technology and sustainability. Not out of luxury, but out of necessity and vision.
