What does it cost to transport your car from Dubai to Europe?

Many people who live in Dubai or regularly spend time there also spend time in Europe. It is then pleasant to have your own car with you, but taking your car is not so simple. There are various ways to transport your car between Dubai and Europe, each with its own costs and lead time. A Dubai resident recently shared his experience: he flew his Ferrari to the Netherlands for 22,000 euros and sent it back by boat for 5,000 euros.

These amounts give an indication, but the actual costs can vary depending on the type of car, the season and the chosen transporter. In this article we list the options and costs, so that you can make a well-considered choice if you are considering taking your car to Europe. We base ourselves on a concrete example and give you guidance to determine for yourself what the best approach is for you.

The trend: taking your own car to Europe

More and more people who live in Dubai or have a second home there also spend longer periods in Europe. Think of the summer months, family visits or business trips. In such a case, you do not want to depend on rental cars or public transport, but simply get into your own familiar car. Taking your own car gives freedom and comfort, especially if you are used to a certain car or if you have a special car that you do not want to just leave behind.

Transporting your car between Dubai and Europe is now quite possible, but there is a price tag attached. A Dubai resident who recently had his Ferrari flown to the Netherlands paid 22,000 euros for it. On the return journey he chose the boat, which cost 5,000 euros. These amounts show that costs can add up considerably, but for those who can afford it, it is a luxury that makes travelling a lot more pleasant.

Flying: fast but expensive

If you want your car in Europe quickly, you can choose air freight. The big advantage is speed: within three days your car is already in the Netherlands. For the Ferrari mentioned earlier, an amount of 22,000 euros was charged for a one-way trip. That is a substantial amount, but for those in a hurry or who own a very valuable car, it can be worth the investment. The costs depend on the type of car, the dimensions and the weight, but in general flying is the most expensive option.

Flying is often used for exclusive cars, classic cars or when there is an urgent reason. Think of a relocation, an event or a long holiday that is already planned. Because capacity is limited and special handling is required, the price is high. Yet for some it is the only logical choice, for example if the car cannot be missed for long or if the boat journey involves too many risks for a vulnerable car.

Shipping by boat: cheaper but slower

The cheaper way to transport your car between Dubai and Europe is by boat. For the return journey from the Netherlands to Dubai, the same owner paid only 5,000 euros. On the other hand, the journey takes about forty days. That long lead time is not a problem for many people, especially if they do not need their car immediately. The biggest advantage is the considerably lower price, which makes it an attractive option for those who consider budget more important than speed.

However, sea transport also has disadvantages. The chance of delay is greater, for example due to bad weather, busy ports or logistical problems. For a car that must be in Europe by a certain date, that can be annoying. In addition, you must take into account extra costs for insurance, customs clearance and possibly storage. But for those who are flexible, the boat is a fine way to save money.

Cost overview and points to consider

If you add up the costs of a return trip, you arrive at approximately 30,000 euros: 22,000 euros for the outbound flight and 5,000 euros for the return by boat. Of course, you can also go by boat both ways, which is even more economical, but then you are travelling for forty days twice. Some choose to fly only the outbound journey and ship the return, as in the example. It is a personal trade-off between speed and price.

In addition to transport costs, there are other matters to take into account. Think of insurance during transport, customs formalities and any modifications to the car for another country (such as lighting or emission standards). You may also need to temporarily deregister the car or apply for an export licence plate. It is wise to sort this out well in advance, so that you are not faced with surprises. For those who have the budget, transporting your own car is a luxury that gives your stay in Europe just that little bit extra.
