Dubai is fully committed to using smart technology to improve road safety. Using AI-assisted radars, the police accurately register traffic violations. These advanced systems make it virtually impossible to avoid a fine. Here are eight violations that will guarantee you a penalty in 2026 if you are not careful.
Smart Systems Lead to Higher Detection Rates and Stricter Penalties
During a press conference earlier this year, the Traffic Department of Dubai Police explained the fines, the number of black points, and the periods of vehicle confiscation for specific violations.
- Speeding: The cameras register exactly how fast you are driving. Exceeding the limit by more than 80 km/h risks a fine of AED 3,000 (approx. €770 / £660), 60 days of vehicle confiscation, and 23 black points. Exceeding by 60 km/h results in AED 2,000 (approx. €513 / £440), 20 days confiscation, and 12 points. For 50 km/h it is AED 1,000 (approx. €257 / £220), for 40 km/h AED 700 (approx. €180 / £154), for 30 km/h AED 600 (approx. €154 / £132), and for 20 km/h AED 300 (approx. €77 / £66). With 24 black points or more, you will temporarily lose your driving licence.
- Running a Red Light: Running a red light results in a fine of AED 1,000 (approx. €257 / £220), 30 days confiscation, and 12 black points. If you additionally drive the wrong way in a mandatory lane, you will pay AED 400 (approx. €103 / £88) with a light vehicle or AED 1,500 (approx. €385 / £330) and 12 points with a heavy vehicle.
- Driving Against Traffic: Driving against the direction of traffic? This leads to a fine of AED 600 (approx. €154 / £132), 7 days confiscation, and four black points. Incorrect use of the hard shoulder results in AED 1,000 (approx. €257 / £220), 30 days confiscation, and six points.
- Not Wearing a Seatbelt: No seatbelt? Expect a fine of AED 400 (approx. €103 / £88) and four black points on your licence.
- Using Your Phone: Distracted by your phone? Then you will pay AED 800 (approx. €205 / £176) and receive four black points. Excessively tinted windows result in a fine of AED 1,500 (approx. €385 / £330).
- Unsafe Distance, Noise Pollution, and Pedestrians: Not maintaining a safe distance: AED 400 (approx. €103 / £88) and four points. Driving a vehicle that makes excessive noise? AED 2,000 (approx. €513 / £440) and 12 points. Not giving way to pedestrians at a zebra crossing? AED 500 (approx. €128 / £110) and six points.
- Incorrect Parking and U-turns: Making a U-turn in an unsuitable location: AED 500 (approx. €128 / £110) and four points. Stopping without reason in the middle of the road can lead to six points. Heavy vehicles driving in prohibited zones: AED 1,000 (approx. €257 / £220) and four points. Blocking others by incorrect parking: AED 500 (approx. €128 / £110).
- Driving with an Expired Licence: Driving with an expired licence? Then you will receive a fine of AED 500 (approx. €128 / £110) and four black points.
