Is drinking alcohol allowed in Dubai? The rules you need to know

Dubai is known for its vibrant nightlife and luxury resorts, but it remains part of the United Arab Emirates where Islamic norms are guiding principles. This often raises the question: is drinking alcohol allowed in Dubai?

The short answer is yes, but there are clear conditions you must adhere to.

Drinking alcohol is legal, but only in the right places

In Dubai, drinking alcohol is permitted for non-Muslims aged 21 and over, but not just anywhere. You may only drink in places that have a licence for it, such as certain restaurants, bars, hotels or clubs. It is also permitted to drink alcohol at home, provided you have a valid alcohol licence for that purpose. Buying or possessing alcohol without a licence is officially prohibited.

Public alcohol consumption, such as drinking on the street or on the beach, is always forbidden and can lead to fines or even arrest. Driving under the influence is also strictly punished, with substantial fines, penalty points on your licence, and even imprisonment.

Since 2020, legislation around alcohol has been relaxed. Federal law (Article 313 bis) now states that alcohol consumption is not punishable as long as it takes place in locations where it is legally permitted. However, individual emirates may establish their own rules. In more conservative emirates such as Sharjah, alcohol remains completely prohibited.

Are you allowed to drink on your balcony or private property?

A frequently asked question is whether you are allowed to drink alcohol on your balcony or in your garden. If your residence is located in Dubai and you have a valid alcohol licence, you are in principle permitted to drink in your private space. Your balcony or garden is included in this, as long as it is not considered publicly visible.

Nevertheless, caution is advised. Noise disturbance or visible alcohol consumption can still lead to complaints from neighbours or the owners' association. Dubai has strict norms regarding public behaviour, and although your balcony is 'private', it may be visible to others, which could lead to problems.
