The question of how expensive life in Dubai is compared to the Netherlands often arises for those considering relocating or working temporarily in the United Arab Emirates. While both countries have their own advantages and disadvantages, clear differences can be seen in rental prices, groceries, fuel, and taxes.
Rent and Fixed Costs in Dubai and the Netherlands
For a one-bedroom apartment in the heart of Downtown Dubai, the average monthly rent is between €1,500 and €1,600 (approx. AED 6,000-6,400 / £1,300-£1,400). For comparison, in Amsterdam, prices for a similar apartment range from €1,000 to €2,000. This makes rental costs high in both cities, but Amsterdam shows a wider price range.
Regarding utilities, the costs are fairly similar. For a one-bedroom apartment in Dubai, monthly bills are around €200 (approx. AED 800 / £170). In the Netherlands, costs for gas, water, and electricity are at a comparable level, making this expense component more or less equal.
Daily Expenses, Fuel, and Taxes
When it comes to groceries, the differences are more significant. An average family in Dubai spends about €300 per month (approx. AED 1,200 / £260) on groceries. In the Netherlands, this amount is considerably higher, between €500 and €600 per month. This makes Dubai much more affordable in this respect.
Fuel prices show an even greater contrast. In Dubai, a litre of petrol currently costs around €0.70 (approx. AED 2.80 / £0.60), while in the Netherlands it is almost €2 per litre. For motorists, this means a significant difference in monthly expenses.
The biggest difference between the two countries, however, lies in taxation. In Dubai, there is no personal income tax and corporate tax is only 9%. In the Netherlands, personal income tax rates, by contrast, range from 37% to 49%, which makes a substantial difference to disposable income.
